Many conventional exterior coatings specify a 50 degree minimum, and low-temperature formulations extend down toward the mid-30s, but those ratings usually apply to surface temperature and to the cure period, not just the moment of application. A shaded north wall can be well below the air temperature. We measure the surface, check the overnight low, and apply only within the product's stated range. Pushing a coating below its rating is the most common cause of adhesion failure we see up here.

Three common causes, in rough order. It was applied too late in the season and the film never fully formed before the first freeze. It went over a chalked or dirty surface, so it bonded to loose powder rather than to the substrate and came off in sheets. Or water is getting into the wall from behind, often snowmelt sitting at the base or a flashing detail, and pushing the coating off. The failure pattern tells us which one. We identify the cause before recoating, otherwise the new paint does the same thing.
