At the base of every wall we decide where monsoon water goes: a hard splash surface or a drain, not bare sand that will wash. Backfill is free draining and drains get a real outlet. On sandy sites we set the footing deeper than the likely scour line rather than trusting landscaping to hold the grade.

Does stone veneer hold up to freeze and thaw at Hurricane's elevation?
Yes, as long as the assembly sheds water. Freeze damage in masonry is water damage with a temperature trigger. Hurricane sits roughly 700 feet above St. George, so cold nights arrive sooner and last longer, and any joint or cap detail that lets water stand will start giving up mortar. What matters is a proper drainage plane behind the veneer, flashing at every horizontal termination, joints tooled rather than raked into hollows on exposed walls, and caps that overhang and drip clear of the face. Veneer failing here usually has a detailing problem, not a material problem.
How do you keep monsoon runoff from undermining a stone wall in Hurricane?
By deciding where the water goes before the wall goes up. Monsoon storms between mid June and the end of September drop a lot of water in a short time, and hard desert ground sends most of it across the surface rather than into it. At the base of a wall that water digs. We look at what is draining from uphill, set the footing below the depth water can scour to, put a hard splash surface or a drain at the base instead of loose sand, and grade so runoff has a path that is not the foot of the wall.

Why does mortar stiffen so fast on a Hurricane summer afternoon?
Low humidity and hot masonry pull water out of the mix before the cement has used it. In this climate a stone unit sitting in the sun runs much hotter than the air around it, and it takes water out of the mortar the instant the two touch. That leaves a joint that looks set but never gained strength, which turns up later as mortar you can scrape out with a key. The fixes are unglamorous: keep stone and sand shaded, dampen absorbent units before setting, mix smaller batches, and work the shaded elevation through the hottest hours.
