Why did the drywall seams in my Kanab house crack the first winter?
Almost always framing shrinkage. Kanab is in climate zone 5B, so once heating season starts the interior air gets very dry and the lumber in the walls and trusses gives up moisture it had when the house was framed. As the wood shrinks it moves the board attached to it, and the tape joints are the least forgiving part of the assembly. It usually shows first at the ceiling-to-wall line and above door openings. It is a normal first-season settling pattern, and it is repaired once the movement has stabilized rather than during it.
Can drywall be hung in an unheated shell in Kanab in January?
Board can go up, but taping in an unheated shell at 4,970 feet is a bad trade. Joint compound needs to be above freezing to cure. If it freezes before it dries it loses bond and you get a joint that looks finished and fails later. Beyond the freezing point, a cold shell also means the framing has not yet gone through the drying that heating season causes, so you are finishing joints that are about to move. We would rather have temporary heat running and the building closed in first.
Does the dry air in Kanab change how joint compound is finished?
Yes. At this elevation with 5B winter air indoors, compound skins faster than a lot of published drying guidance assumes. That shortens the working time on each coat. If you keep pulling a knife through compound that has already started to set, you tear the surface and leave ridges you then have to sand out. We mix for the conditions in that room on that day, work in smaller sections, and let each coat dry properly rather than stacking coats to make up time. It is slower on paper and faster in practice.
